FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a facial peel?

A facial peel is a way of enhancing exfoliation of the skin, removing unhealthy, dead skin cells from the surface layer so allowing rejuvenated, new skin to emerge.  The new skin will appear brighter, healthier, plumper and tighter.

I’ve had a peel at a beautician, are yours the same?

We use Dermaceutic skin peels, they are medical peels and can only be used by health care professionals. Beauticians and beauty therapists can only use very mild skin peels which are not as effective.

What chemicals do the peels contain?

The peels contain a variety of naturally occurring chemicals, including; glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and  trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

What are skin peels used for?

They are used to rejuvenate and improve overall skin quality.  They can help treat oily skin, acne and problems with pigmentation.  They can also improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged and ageing skin. Your practitioner will advise the best type of peel for your skin type.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatments vary a little for each type of peel but most treatments will take approximately 15-20 minutes.  The face is cleansed and the peel is applied to the area being treated and left to work for a few minutes.  The peel will then be removed and professional skin care products applied to soothe and protect the skin.

Is the treatment painful?

During the procedure you experience tingling, stinging or a sensation of heat. The sensation will only last the length of the procedure; professional skin care products applied after the treatment will soothe and comfort your skin.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on your skin type, skin condition and the type of peel that you are having.  With Mask Peel, Milk Peel and Cosmo (TCA) Peel we recommend a course of 4 peels at 2-4 weekly intervals.  If you have a Spot Peel one treatment is often enough but can be repeated after one month if there is persistent pigmentation.

Can anyone have a peel?

Most people can have a peel but they should be avoided if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, having skin treatments such as micro-dermabrasion or laser skin rejuvenation. Peels are not suitable for skin which is recently injured, burned, infected (e.g. inflammatory acne, coldsores etc.)

Are there any side effects?

Your skin may be red, tight, itchy or hot for 1-3 days post treatment but this is normal and can be managed with good skincare products.  With some peels your skin will flake off. Your practitioner will give advice about the after effects of your chosen peel and how to manage them.

Is there anything I should do after the treatment?

Your practitioner can advise you on what skin care products to use after your treatment.  It is very important to protect your skin from the sun for at least a month post treatment.
